MEMBERSHIP 2007/2008
Membership Tips It is the duty of our club to add new members from time to time so we may not only increase our usefulness and influence as a club, but also to extend the spirit of Rotary throughout the community. There are many reasons to join Rotary, here is just one. Leadership Development Rotary is an organization of successful professionals. Team building, fundraising, public speaking, planning, organization, and communication are just a sampling of the leadership skills that club members can exercise and enhance. Being a Rotary leader provides further experience in learning how to motivate, inspire and guide others. Be thinking of whom you might want to be your guest at our meeting in TWO weeks. (Next weeks club assembly would not be the meeting of choice.) Remember, the first meeting's breakfast is covered by the club. Subsequent meetings should be paid by you or the guest ($19) "What you do is how you make a living, what you give is how you make a life." - Winston Churchill Have a great week!
When speaking with club members, I find most came in by referral rather than by any type of general marketing. Members would also like some ideas on how to talk about Rotary. The big question we all need to be comfortable answering is "What is Rotary?" You could respond with the usual response which would be correct but may not be the response that entices someone to join. When asked you might want to try saying, "Rotary is a fun group of professionals that puts greater meaning in my life." Then add in a specific project, program or event that you participated in. I encourage you to share your wonderful Rotary story. Another word track might be, "Rotary is great way to give back to the community, hear informative speakers and get to know other business professionals. Do you have an interest in community service and meeting other business professionals?" The first step to a larger membership is to begin a conversation. Do not assume there is not an interest. Personalize your conversation. Membership is everybody's job, not just that of a small committee. Make a commitment today to have a conversation with someone about Rotary this week. From that you can explore the prospect visiting our club, then about joining. Small steps first. Why Join Rotary? (One of twenty reasons that will be brought to you each week. Reprinted from Rotary International) The opportunity to Serve - "Rotary is a service club. It's business is mankind; its product is service. Rotarians provide community service - to both the local and international communities. This is the best reason for perhaps becoming a Rotarian: The chance to do and to sense the self-fulfillment of doing something for somebody else, which comes in the process. And the return to one's own life. Rotarians believe in service above self; it is richly rewarding. "They profit Most who serves the best."
If I or anyone on the committee can be of help to you, just let us know. We welcome your participation and input. All the best, Thom Murray, Bill Poole
