Washington U.S.A. Abuse Prevention Policy 1. Each volunteer in an activity interacting with children, youth, or developmentally disabled or physically disabled adults should complete a Request for Criminal History Information pursuant to the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act, RCW 43.43.830 – 845. The document must be presented to the appropriate state agency and the agency must have approved the volunteer prior to the volunteer beginning the activity. 2. Answers to questions which indicate prior convictions in the area of abuse or crimes against children or other persons will exclude the volunteer from participating in an activity that might involve personal contact with target populations or individuals. 3. Children and youth should be supervised at all times by at least one adult and have a second adult within visual contact and/or hearing distance. In connecting rooms with a shared door, it is appropriate to have one adult per room as long as the door is open and visual or auditory contact can be maintained. 4. Children, youth, and volunteers involved in a program, activity or event should be in groups of three or more people per room. 5. When volunteers meet with children outside scheduled events, the following guidelines should be followed: · Group activities (three or more persons) are highly preferred and encouraged over one-on-one meetings. · One-on-one meetings should take place in public places within view of other people. 6. For any overnight stay involving children, such as a camping trip, there must be at least two adults present. There should be at least two adult volunteers in each sleeping area. 7. All volunteers must be careful to maintain physical boundaries that are appropriate for the age and emotional level of the child, youth or adult. Caution, respect and common sense must be used when offering physical support. Requesting permission before giving physical touch is preferable.
